This Network Capacity Planner - Specialist at Kaiser Permanente performs tactical and strategic planning for Enterprise Networks. This individual also plans and engineers Enterprise Networks to meet user requirements. In addition, the Network Capacity Planner - Specialist develops and documents network plans, identifying current conditions and making recommendations to ensure that network infrastructure is positioned to meet emerging business requirements.

As Network Capacity Planner - Specialist you must manage research/development activities in preparation for the introduction and integration of new and leading-edge technology; assist in the evaluation of newer networking technology and migration plans for users to move to these technologies; and consider network topologies, internetworking protocols on the backbone, reliability and maintainability, network management and cost analysis. You will provide Enterprise users with the best solutions to their networking problems; analyze and interpret network traffic data; perform network modeling for performance assessment, enterprise network architecture and "what-if" scenario analysis; and report network utilization/growth. In addition you will create network error and capacity planning reports; perform product evaluations, recommendations and planning to provide network management, capacity and performance, trending, and disaster recovery solutions associated with maintaining LAN/WAN platforms; design/teach advanced workshops for technical staff on the use of LAN, WAN and Internet troubleshooting networking techniques; and attend vendor seminars and classes to keep up-to-date with respect to networking solutions.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1.) Produce Monthly Exception Report
2.) Provide information and analysis as part of the Quarterly Capacity Report
3.) Participate in ongoing technical evaluations of applications or network hardware as required
4.) Complete Network Certifications as requested via Service Requests
5.) Perform general analysis of LAN and WAN capacity in an Ad Hoc manner as requested
6.) Primary assignments involve Kaiser's most complex and critical technical issues.

Network Planning:
Perform tactical (3 to 6 month view) and strategic (6 to 36 month view) planning for Enterprise Networks.
Responsible for the planning, and engineering of Enterprise Networks to meet user requirements.
Develop and document network plans, identifying current conditions and making recommendations to ensure that the network infrastructure is positioned to meet emerging business requirements.
Manages research and development activities in preparation for the introduction and integration of new and leading edge technology. Assists with the evaluation of newer networking technology and with the migration plan for users to move to these new technologies. This migration planning involves the consideration of: (a) network topologies, (b) internetworking protocols on the backbone, (c) reliability and maintainability, (d) network management, (e) cost analysis.

Consulting/User Support:
Work with Project managers to determine networking .
Provide the Enterprise users with the best solutions to their networking problems from an institutional perspective.

Networked Services and Metrics:
Analyze network traffic data, and interpret network traffic data (long-range capacity planning).
Perform network modeling for performance assessment, enterprise network architecture and "what-if" scenario analysis.
Analysis and reporting of network utilization and growth. Producing trend analysis reports. Creating network error reports.

Developing capacity planning reports. Assist in the development of capacity planning processes. Incorporation of predictive analysis tools into the capacity planning process.
Product evaluation, recommendation, and planning abilities to provide the network management, capacity and performance, trending, and disaster recovery solutions associated with maintaining LAN and WAN platforms.

Training:
Design and teach advanced workshops for technical staff on the use of Local Area Network, Wide Are Network and Internet troubleshooting networking techniques.

Information Exchange:
Work to promote communication and exchange of information and opinions concerning network operations and planning within Kaiser Permanente.

Vendor Relations:
Open and maintain communications with vendors of hardware, software, and networking solutions compatible with Kaiser Permanente's activities. Attend vendor seminars and classes to keep up-to-date with respect to networking solutions.
Other duties as assigned.

ANTICIPATED DELIVERABLES IN FIRST 120 DAYS
1.) Produce a portion of the Monthly Exception Report
2.) Provide information and analysis as part of the Quarterly Capacity Report
3.) Complete Network Certifications as requested via Service Requests
4.) Perform general analysis of LAN and WAN capacity in an Ad Hoc manner as requested


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
1.) In depth knowledge of network WAN behavior and newer technologies.
2.) Experience performing packet captures
3.) Conversant with current Cisco Router and Switch IOS versions
4.) Knowledgeable in Network Monitoring and Management Technologies
5.) Advanced knowledge of network design in a non-homogeneous environment
6.) Basic understanding of statistics and their calculations (mean, max, mid, range, Standard Deviation)
7.) 10+ years of relevant job experience.
8.) Recognized as a technical expert in one or more critical products, programs and/or technologies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1.) Experience Planning for Enterprise Networks with a 6 month and longer view.
2.) Knowledge of capacity planning and tools to monitor capacity
3.) Knowledge of application behavior on a WAN
4.) Experience using and interpreting different packet capture technologies
5.) Knowledgeable in Local and Wide Area Network Diagnostics and troubleshooting techniques
6.) Advanced experience in using Excel, Visio, Access and Word to produce reports and documentation
7.) Experience as a Technical Writer or "Request For Proposal" creator
8.) Experience in Local and Wide Area Load Balancing technologies
9.) Knowledgeable in Network Security and Intrusion Detection Technologies
10.) Candidate must possess a working knowledge of network performance management and analysis tools including VitalNet and/or Concord NetHealth, Cisco Works, NetScout products and various protocol analyzers (sniffers, etc.).
11.) A familiarity with statistics, UNIX and Shell Script programming are preferred
