We are currently seeking a staff writer to report, write and rewrite medical information for Coffey custom publications. This position will research and interview sources to acquire information for articles, and will work with publication editors to create assignments, facilitate editing and source approval and may suggest artwork for articles.
Essential Job Functions:
• Researches, reads and reports information from authoritative sources, including peer-reviewed journals, scientific papers, personal interviews with medical authorities, personal interviews with client-provided sources, and electronic and traditional library sources.
• Writes in a manner that is accurate, clear, organized, friendly, positive and attractive to the lay reader, conforms to Coffey standards of style and quality, and conforms to client style.
• Identifies, finds, contacts and interviews leading authorities and/or client sources as assigned; interviews other sources as assigned.
• Provides finished articles to sources for approval.
• Provides copies of all research information and names, titles, addresses, and phone and fax numbers for all sources as back-up resources for every fact provided in articles.
• Works cooperatively with editors. Alerts editors of potential problems, including reaching sources in a timely manner, and problems fulfilling assignments as written.
• Monitors industry and client news and developments to keep aware of major medical, managed-care and hospital industry issues, research and treatment breakthroughs and changes in technology, diagnostic procedures and prevention measures.
Education, Experience and Skills Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communication or science, or equivalent experience. Knowledge of journalistic and scientific research.
• Ability to read, comprehend and report complex medical information.
• Advanced skill as a reporter and writer of complex subjects for the lay public, and of promotional material for managed care organizations and their members.
• Ability to carry out detailed assignments independently.
• Persistent and resourceful but professionally courteous in obtaining information and interviews.
• Ability to distinguish in writing between scientific information that has been firmly established and unresolved scientific questions.
• Ability to distinguish between recognized medical authorities and sources and secondary sources.
